Fischertag is a traditional local festival in Memmingen, Bavaria – and as the daughter of a Memmingen fisherman, I’ve grown up with this tradition. Every year, the town’s stream is completely fished out, so the water can be drained and the streambed cleaned.

The Festival
To protect the fish, they’re carefully caught before the stream is emptied. At exactly 8 a.m., following a cannon shot, dozens of fishermen jump into the stream to catch the biggest trout. The one who does, becomes the Fisher King and is honored in a festive parade through the city.
The Memminger Mau
“Mau im Zuber” (Moon in the Tub) is one of the best-known local legends – and the reason why Memmingen is often nicknamed Maustadt ("Moon City"). In the local dialect, mau means moon.
The Perfect Moon
Since the Memminger Mau serves as a kind of mascot for the Fischertag, a moon was a key visual element in my poster design. But what makes a moon feel real?
It has craters, texture, and – most importantly – it glows.
In Memmingen, it’s not silver or white, but a warm yellow-orange glow that lights up the night sky. That’s exactly the color I gave to my illustrated Mau.
