The ORCA SPHERE project redefines how we encounter orcas. It presents a visionary and sustainable alternative to live animal exhibitions – one that is ethically responsible and technologically forward-thinking. Using cutting-edge animatronics, immersive visual storytelling, and interactive experiences, this concept transports visitors into a captivating underwater world. It inspires not only wonder but also a deeper awareness of marine life and conservation.
Developed as part of a forward-looking Bachelor thesis in Brand Design, ORCA SPHERE brings together innovative brand strategy, multisensory spatial design, and emotional storytelling. It tackles the ethical concerns surrounding the captivity of orcas and offers a compelling response: a new kind of experience that harmoniously blends technology, art, and environmental responsibility.
While illustration was the medium of choice in this phase, a real-world implementation would naturally involve 3D renderings to create a more immersive and realistic experience.
Traditional aquariums and marine parks are often criticized for keeping orcas in confined spaces that do not meet their natural needs. These practices raise serious ethical concerns. The goal of ORCA SPHERE was to create a captivating and educational alternative using animatronic orcas – allowing visitors to experience the magic of these animals without causing harm.
By combining immersive technology, animatronics, and thoughtful spatial design, ORCA SPHERE creates a stunningly realistic underwater world. Visitors can interact with lifelike orcas, build emotional connections, and engage in meaningful learning – all without live animals in captivity.
The exhibition poster captures the two core elements of ORCA SPHERE: immersion and interactivity. A water-textured background sets the scene, creating a sense of space and depth. At the heart of the visual is a child reaching out to touch an animatronic orca as it gracefully swims around them – a moment of wonder only possible within ORCA SPHERE.
ORCA SPHERE tickets are more than just entry passes – they’re collectible keepsakes. With a variety of designs distributed randomly, the tickets combine functionality with aesthetic appeal. Each one becomes a personal memento of the experience, especially for children, adding an extra layer of excitement and engagement.
The program booklet dives deeper into the purpose behind ORCA SPHERE – spotlighting the need for change in how we present marine life. It explains the ethical concerns of orca captivity and emphasizes how animatronic alternatives can educate, inspire, and protect – all at the same time.
Personalized ID cards combine form and function: names are styled in line with the brand’s visual language, and each card comes with a selectable orca tag. This small yet thoughtful detail reinforces both communication and a strong sense of team identity within the exhibition – a design solution that strengthens internal culture and visitor connection alike.
